If you want something tankish, use heavy, otherwise stick with light to be more mobile and have more carry capacity. For birthsign, The Mage for extra magicka. However, light armor protects me in those up-close battles, and is an actual skill which would help in leveling up. You do not need a shield to benefit from the master perk. Your light armor is like a second skin after all those days and weeks wearing it.
